The Legend of the Diamond Willow
"The
diamond willow, a gnarled, ugly, knotty wood, which is culturally
important, grows profusely in our area. Once the bark is stripped away, a
beautiful golden color with red-hued diamond-shaped knots is revealed.
It is very hard to make into a flute. Just as the true beauty of the
flute lies not with fancy, superficial decorations like beads and
feathers, it lies beneath within and with its voice;
the Ojibwa have a story called "Homely One" about a woman, less
attractive than others, competing for the love of the chief's son.
Through the woman's use of diamond willow, she stripped away her outer
bark to let her true inner beauty be revealed, like the wood itself, and
she won the heart of the chief's son."
